How can I change the speaker voice for the command "say"? (Language Help)

Hi,

how can I change the speaker voice for the command "say" from English to German; I mean change the voice so that it does pronounce text like an German would pronounce it - especially numbers like, say, 1 or 59 - and not like an Englishman?

I am using BASIC256 from BASIC256-1.1.2.6_Win32_Install.exe on Windows 8 (German Windows installation). I myself have no problem with English, but my grandson who just started learning English at school would like to hear German.

Why do I think that the voice settings can be changed?

* 1 * During one of my tinkerings with installing different versions of BASIC256, the command "say" produced definitely a soft female voice speaking French instead of the usual English. However, I could not reproduce it :-(

* 2 * If I start windows narrator on my Win8 system, it is a female voice speaking German.

* 3 * In C:\Program Files (x86)\BASIC256\espeak-data\voices I see files such as "de", "en" or "fr". >>> How can I set one of these as default for BASIC256? <<<

Thanks,

cub256

On the Edit > Preferences screen's Sound tab you can change the voice.

Thanks Jim, but:
my BASIC-256 version 0.9.6.69 has no sound tab in Preferences, i.e.,

Edit > Preferences >Screen "BASIC-256 Preferences and Settings" >
-Preferences and Settings Password: ? How can I get a password?
- allow system statment
- allow getsettings/setsettings statement
- allow portin/portout statements

That is all!

Ok, I find the sound tab in BASIC256 version 1.1.4.0 for windows from sourceforge.net (Win32_Install.exe), and it works on my Windows 8 beautifully!

But with your ppa-version BASIC256 1.1.2.3 on my Ubuntu 14.04, the sound tab is there, too, simple "say" statements work, but other programs that run well with the windows version or with Ubuntu's own lower version do not run at all, e.g.,

from RosettaCode http://rosettacode.org/wiki/99_Bottles_of_Beer/Basic#BASIC256, or minesweeper or game of life.

I tried to build, e.g., version 1.1.3.0 for Ubuntu from sourceforge, but I cannot find any configure file in the unpacked archive :-(

What can I do to get a "preferences > sound" version of BASIC256 for Ubuntu 14.04?

Thanks,

Siggi
